As the submission dateline for my dissertation is due soon, I had no choice but to face the music now. I had to start my gruelling on-site research. For those who have no idea what I am talking about, "dissertation" is the research paper I need to do for my thesis. The topic I am working on is the accommodation of foreign workers in Singapore. So yes, my on-site research will mean I have to go down to their accommodation i.e. commercial dormitories which i chose in particular and survey the workers as well. Sounds fun, isn’t it? -_- "
So, I spent my whole weekend touring around Singapore, taking pictures of the commercial dormitories, surveying the foreign workers who live there and the residents in the neighbourhood. And I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to my ah mat a.k.a my Dear for driving me around relentlessly. Thank you Dear!!!!!! *muackzzzz*
When we asked the foreign workers if they are satisfied with their current living conditions, almost all of them said "Happy. Yes. Good. Happy." But when we took a look at their rooms, you will be appalled that this kind of housing still exists in Singapore.
The Kitchen - shared by 7 people
With these current living conditions, yet they are more than happy to be in it. Reason being this accommodation is way better than what they have in their own countries. So can you imagine how poor is their living conditions?
One of the foreign workers told us that he has a wife and a 6-year old son who are both in UK now. His son received a scholarship and is studying in UK right now. I was wondering: “The kid is only 6 years old and he already has a scholarship to study in UK??? Is that unbelievable or what?” But I guess he has no reason to lie to us on that. Seeing that look on his face, you can see that he is indeed a happy man. With a daily salary of merely $26, his wish is to earn enough money for his family and hoping for a better life when his son grows up. I sincerely hope that his wish will be fulfilled.
So, after a 2-day site research, I conclude that we should really appreciate what we have and the people around us now. Nothing should be ever taken for granted. And I guess we should really remove our discriminating eyes whenever we see these foreigners and treat them better. It is the few black sheeps which are causing trouble. 別一竹竿打翻全船人. After all, they are just trying to make a living here and are doing us a favours by doing shit work which we Singaporeans shun.
