Occasionally, Dear and I will reminisce about our childhood and we will start on our usual comparisons again.
Dear: When I was young, I love it when my aunties and cousins stayed over at my house. My cousins and I would pitch tents with blankets and have ghoststory-telling session. It was so fun. When we don't have toys, we can only create fun without toys since we were poor.
Me: What!?!? You don't have toys? I thought you told me you had those nintendo games? And what are those legos, toy cars, action figures and Happy Meal toys I found in your room?
*silence*
Me: I am the poor kid ok! I didn't have barbie dolls loh. No money to even eat McDonald Happy Meals. I can only afford to spend 70 cents to buy a tube of plasticine. And 10 cents everyday to buy a piece of eraser which has a country's flag printed on it. (The eraser game was the hip in primary schools then and I remember I won quite a lot.)
Yes, indeed. I was a poor child.
As a child, I could only indulge myself in cheap and simple toys. (or are they even toys in the first place? hmm...)
However, there were other forms of non-material recreation to keep my sister and I occupied and entertained.
We went to the playgrounds to play hide-and-seek and catching with our friends (perhaps as deprived as us too).
We went to canals to catch small fishes. (and trust me, you won't want to go there as it really stinks.)
We played 'interesting' games at home.
And how 'interesting' were they?
We flooded the whole living room with water and slided from one end to the other, on our knees.
We wore socks and pretended we were skiing in the living room where the floor was covered in talcum powder.
We had a low cabinet in the kitchen and when we opened the cabinet, the cabinet door blocked the kitchen entrance. Thus, we played 'masak masak' in that area with real cooking wares and cutleries. The cabinet door served as the entrance of my 'shop' and my sister pretended to be the customer who had to enter via that 'entrance'.
Like many other unfortunate kids, our hair were cut by my mothers - with a bowl. It was our dreams to have LOOOONNNNNGGGGGG hair. But of course, we could not afford a wig. Instead, we used something else. Something that everyone has. A PAIR OF PANTS!!!!! We fitted our satin pyjamas bottoms on our heads and TADA!!!!! WE HAVE SILKY LOOONNNGGG HAIR!!!!! We even braided our 'hair' by twisting the 2 legs and tied with a rubber band.
Since we had loooonnnggg beautiful hair, we needed to wash it right? And where did we wash them? In a salon, of course!! We arranged a row of chairs in the shower room and my sister lied on the the chairs while I washed her hair. The real hair though.
However, we had to end all our fun and clear up the mess before our parents came home, if not we would be asking for more scoldings, mainly for the waste of water and talcum powder.
The Deprived Kids
(A bit of background on the picture: It is the same house that I am living in now. My godmum came to visit and wanted to have a picture of us. Thus, we got dressed-up. If not why were we wearing dress and shoes in the god-damn freaking house?!?!? And why must the outfits always be matching??!?!?! Kinda gross but we liked it. Wahahaha!!! My legs used to be so slim too! My current carrot legs must be because of all those marching during St. John days. As I was attending swimming lessons then, I looked so CHAR TA!!!!! UGLY DEPRIVED KID!!!! BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! )
I missed my childhood days. If only life can remain so simple and happy. Simple is indeed Happiness.
P.S.: I wonder if there are other people who did the same things as we did or are my sister and I the only creative ones. Hee.
P.S.S. : Why ain't my friends updating their blogs!?!?!?! Do they know I view their blogs everyday and leave in disappointment?
P.S.S.S. : I am taking a short break from work now and I have been wanting to blog about this for quite some time. So cut me some slack from my thesis k?
