As I was doing my 3D model, I can't help thinking about the news Dear told me this afternoon.
A couple we know is getting a divorce soon.
*Sighs*
I managed to google the typical contents of the marriage vow in Singapore.
"...Will you love him/her, comfort him/her, honour and keep him/her in sickness and in health and forsaking all others, be faithful to him/her, so long as you both shall live?..."
How touching. Seeing this almost brought me to tears.
Two simple words - "I do" actually hold such great significance in a relationship. It means the couple will be spending the rest of their lives together. It means a major commitment and responsibility in their lives. It means love till they die.
Whenever I attend someone's wedding, I always feel so deeply touched at the moment when they said "I do." The union of two hearts. The union of two lives. How blissful that is.
But how many couples actually honour this promise?
"I hate your family. I want a divorce."
"I married you because of the child. I do not love you at all. I want a divorce."
"I am not happy with our sex life. I want a divorce."
"I do not deserve your love. I want a divorce."
"I have someone else I love. I want a divorce."
Do they even understand the significance of the vow? Or they just felt that it was merely a legal procedure they had to follow in order to get married?
If they cannot honour their promise, why get married?
If they do not love each other, why get married?
If the love they share is so fragile, why get married?
Perhaps it is because of a unborn child, a HDB flat or they simply thought it is time to do so after so many years of courtship.
However, if they really married out of love, where has the love gone to then? Shouldn't love grow fonder over time? Shouldn't love overcome all obstacles?
Perhaps I have placed marriage on the pedestal. Perhaps marriage is not that sacred after all. Perhaps it is simply a paper that can be annulled anytime.
I am losing faith.
Will I be betrayed by an empty promiser in the end?
Or will I be the betrayor instead?
